Message from the Founder
I am KOH Janghong, the founder and headmaster of School of Soom. It is a pleasure to greet you through this online platform. I wish to share my story with you from the depths of my heart.
At the age of sixteen, through a fateful encounter with Grandmaster Cheongsan, I entered the sacred gates of Kouksundo Bakdol-beop and have now walked the path of spiritual cultivation for over 45 years.
Upon entering, I received the Beop-name 'Seosan (瑞山),' and later, before my grandmaster's return to the mountains, he bestowed upon me the Beop-title 'Jinyeong (眞永)—a name that has anchored me through every step of this journey.
The time I spent with my grandmaster allowed me to deeply embody not only his mountain cultivation life but also the hardships and challenges he faced in the secular world, and the essence of the Do(道) contained within them.
However, after my grandmaster returned to the mountains, the organization of Kouksundo began to waver in confusion. I too was compelled to enter society, and through an unintended period of worldly wandering, I experienced countless storms and tribulations.
When I returned to the true home of the Way, the reality I faced was devastating. The senior and junior practitioners who had been together were scattered and divided, each going their separate ways, and the 9,800-year-old Do that my grandmaster had planted as seeds in modern society had been distorted and corrupted.
As one of his disciples, I could not turn away from this situation, and after deep contemplation, I reached one conclusion.
The answer was 'proper education.' Through genuine learning and cultivation, righteous people would grow, and such people would become leaders who guide the world. I became convinced that this was the way to continue my grandmaster's will, reestablish the original mission and role, and contribute to this era.
Therefore, despite poor conditions and insufficient resources, I resolved to turn crisis into opportunity and establish a small and humble yet truthful school—School of Soom.
My grandmaster had also repeatedly emphasized that 'the foundation of the world is education(天下之本),' so I have had established Kouksundo University as a deep educational institution within the organization in 1995, but those hopes and wishes were scattered in the organizational turmoil.
Now I believe we need new education that is deeper, broader in vision, and suited to the currents of our times. New Do education that can embrace both modern scientific insight and traditional wisdom. This is precisely the Kouksundo Bakdol-beop 3.0 era leadership education that School of Soom aspires to provide.
Together with like-minded individuals who share this vision, I aim to take the first steps as an alternative school and systematically build both content and systems professionally to grow into a world-class specialized educational institution.
School of Soom is not merely a place of practice or an educational institution. It is a school that awakens people's inner selves through breath and cultivates leaders who can warmly guide the world. This is a place of learning where practice and scholarship, philosophy and action harmoniously blend together, and a space that opens the possibility of harmonious coexistence—where individuals, society, and the global community can live in unity through the fundamental source of breath.
My belief is unwavering. Those who learn proper breathing and recover deep inner strength are the ones who can maintain their center in chaotic times and lead the world with warmth and wisdom.
School of Soom aims to cultivate genuine people and leaders that this era demands—small but solid, slowly but deeply.
People who do not lose their humanity even in a world of advanced technology. People who do not lose the right direction even in a society where speed is everything.
I hope you will join us on this meaningful path of welcoming such talent together.
Thank you.
